Begrunnelsen ble gitt på engelsk:
We have had the immense pleasure and incredibly difficult task of electing this year’s nominees. We have considered a number of films that have been very different, both in form and theme, and let’s be honest – the economy and funds provided to them.
The films we have seen span a wide cinematic spectrum, from small, intimate observations and relationships to large ideas and views that might just change the world.
The jury has been captivated by the extraordinary precision, cinematic playfulness and overall high quality of work presented to us and in a time where the film industry is going through its trial and tribulation, we have been given proof that there is hope – and it comes, as it has throughout time – in the hands of the youth and with emerging talent.
We’ve clearly seen that new film languages are developing, but at the same time found many of the films express exactly what we are looking for in traditional storytelling; Passion, playfulness and courage in the creation of a film.
This year, due to the high quality of work and nominees, we have decided to give two honorable mentions in addition to selecting an overall winner.
Aalto university
Our first honorable mention goes to a school that has proven a force to be reckoned with and who we wish to encourage everyone in this room and in our industry to keep an eye on moving forward. With their contributions to this year’s program, they’ve demanded we keep an eye on them and they have proven to make it worth our while. Their film programs not only emphasizes the quality among filmmakers and new talents from their region, but lays the path for far greater potential impact across its border and into the world. This school has clearly succeeded in balancing what can be taught through methods and craftsmanship with the freedom of allowing their students to explore and find their own voices with guidance.
Please join us in congratulating and thanking Aalto university for the work they have put into fostering so much talent and providing much needed hope for the future of our industry.
The lightning rod
Our second honorable mention goes to a film that even with a dark and stormy atmosphere and limited dialog, manages to lead us through a spectrum of emotions and paves a path through fear and despair to speckles of understanding and hope. The film holds the audience in constant suspense and manages to intervene theme and genre with subtleness. Led by two exceptional actresses who manage to tell entire stories with single glances, it confirms the power that lies in not only a single woman but especially in a female bond. Please join us in applauding Helmi Donner for “The lighting rod”.
My name is hope
This year's winner has made a film that deals with a central, current and burning issue. But where some take a clear position on a conflict or primarily shed light on an issue to inform the viewer, or some choose to be explicitly political or even take a suggestive stance, this film provides a different perspective and quite literally makes it personal for each and every one.
The film takes place in a small and limited area and with a strict framework provides us with a single and extremely narrow perspective – our own. By not providing us with a face or a voice to the main character, the film manages to force us to stop thinking of the theme as a complicated and big issue happening to others far and away, but rather view it as an everyday conversation happening to each of us here and now.
We are shown very little and thereby forced to understand the story through the pieces we manage to weave together by what little we hear and see around us. And in the end, it confirms the little human truth we all agree on, when we can’t agree on anything else – that there is always hope.
This year’s Next Nordic generation prize goes to Sherwan Haji for “My name is Hope”
